"Against Their Will: North Carolina's Sterilization Program" by Begos, Deaver, Railey, and Sexton

This book is an expose on the 40-year sterilization program run in North Carolina. Through much investigation, the authors uncovered the horrors of this program. The victims included unwed mothers, children, people with physical problems, and the mentally retarded - people whose very freedom of choice was taken away. These authors interviewed many victims so that they could have a clear picture of this horrible program that ultimately led to racially biased practices. The stories and facts are difficult to read but more difficult to ignore. Why would these people be forced to undergo this radical surgery? When and why did it turn so racially motivated? What happened to the people involved? This book answers these questions and many more, and will keep you thinking for a long time.

This was a tough book to read. It is hard to think that this stuff went on in our country, but the information presented here is clear and undeniable. I recommend this book to those who enjoy reading history. I received my free review copy from PR by the Book for an honest review.
