"In the Middle of the Mess" by Sheila Walsh

Sheila Walsh is a prolific writer of spirit filled, honest books. Her message of freedom in Christ continues to shine in this new book. Circumstances get in the way, problems block our view, Satan attacks over and over; but "In the Middle of the Mess," God is there! He wants us to believe that, to fully comprehend that we are constantly held by Him. Sheila Walsh is one of my favorite authors and speakers. Her love for the Lord is transparent, her stories honest and her heart open. We all have problems in our lives that take our breath away sometimes and how we handle them can be up for grabs. In this book, readers will find fresh hope and ideas of trust, confession, Bible meditation, and prayer. The tools to get out of "the mess" are here. 

One of my favorite lines, "But hear this truth: Nothing that affects you is petty to God." pg. 52  I highly recommend this book!

Devotionals, books that aid us in our daily walk with God. Many have been written through the years, touching tough topics and encouraging the discouraged. In this new devotional, Lindsay Franklin touches the tough topics that affect young women today; a devotional that reinforces how much they are loved by God.

Pain, heartache, social requirements for beauty, social media, cyber bullying - just a few of the things that affect young people today. Young women can get drawn in to a world they never imagined due to trying to fit in with the "in" crowd. Peer pressure can make it almost impossible to resist. But in this new devotional, young women will find that they can be armed with God's Word and a short, relevant reading that puts everything into perspective. Nothing takes the place of reading the Bible, but devotionals like this add personal perspective to the reading.

I like this devotional, and think it will make a great gift for several young women I know. I like that there is a verse with a short devotional, and then there is a space for journaling thoughts. That really helps make the lesson of the day stick and become real. I recommend it to anyone with young women in your life. It is well worth sharing!

"The Teen's Guide to Social Media & Mobile Devices" by Jonathan McKee

Social Media, one of the hottest activities of our lifetime. Posting, tweeting, sharing pictures, etc. Is there danger? What should be the focus, especially for teenagers? In this new book by Jonathan McKee, teens (and others) can get 21 tips for keeping yourself safe and being wise when dealing with social media.

Twitter, Facebook, SnapChat, Instagram - all commonly used forms of social media. In the blink of an eye. people all over the world can know more about you than most of your friends. Media does more than letting you engage. It also tracks your likes, your movements, your life moments. This book begins with two letters; one to parents and one to the teen. It then goes into debunking false ideas (i.e. I can delete what I post.), rules of safety (i.e. look at privacy settings, friend requests, think before you post). It is a common sense look at the world through these wonderful and dangerous apps. 

I enjoyed, and learned from, this book. It's easy to read and makes many common sense points. There are "Questions to Ponder," "Tips," and "Something to Think About," that will draw a reader in. I recommend this book to teens and their parents, along with anyone else who whats to be wiser when posting. It is well worth your time.

"Wonder" by R.J. Palacio

August Pullman, aka "Auggie," was born with severe facial deformities, but otherwise he was a normal young man. He had loving parents and sister, and a wonderful dog named Daisy. Due to numerous surgeries, August had been homes schooled. But, that was all going to change as he enters 5th grade!

Auggie can't understand why his parents are "making" him go to Beecher Prep. Why did he have to be around people all the time? People who would stare, make faces, make ugly comments. But, Auggie was likeable and did make some friends, the best of whom were Summer and Jack Will. But then, there were those others! Come along and learn about 5th grade with Auggie. Meet his Director, Mr. Pullman; his teacher, Mr. Brown, who teaches them Precepts during English; his parents, his sister "Via," and the other students in the school. This is a story that will touch even the toughest heart!

"You can't blend in when you were born to stand out." This is one of my favorite lines in the book. I agree with so many others that this should be required reading in middle school, and even for older students/parents. Kindness, courage, friendship, just some of the themes of this book. This book made me laugh, cry, feel anger, and feel joy. I highly recommend it to everyone!

In fact, as Papantonio told me, we’re far more likely to throw a corporate whistleblower in prison than a corrupt corporate CEO. White collar criminals typically get away with a slap on the wrist or, at best, a fine that they are able to write off on their taxes.

"Whistlin' Dixie in a Nor'easter" by Lisa Patton

I really enjoyed this book, so much so that I have the other two in the "Dixie Series" on hold at the library. The reading was easy and quick, the story filled with wonderful details about life in Vermont. I recommend this to readers of all types. You won't be disappointed!

"Imagine - The Great Flood" by Matt Koceich

Corey is a ten year-old boy who doesn't like the decision his parents have made. Why do they have to move to Florida? All of his friends and his school are here in Texas. He "awakens" in the world of Noah, a very different world from his own. As he is met by lions, he is also met by Shem. In the adventure to get the animals on the ark, many things happen at once. He meets good and evil in this land and learns first hand about the war for the soul. He even gets to ride on a rhinoceros! Come, imagine with Corey what it would have been like to live at the time of the flood.

I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone with children, and to everyone who enjoys reading YA and children's literature. You will find Bible truths and imagination woven together to tell the story of God's grace and love. Children will see that God is always the same and He will never fail us. Now, I can't wait for the next "Imagine" book!
